Lantern — Dating Safety Companion
This policy explains how the Lantern mobile app ("Lantern," "the app," "we," "us") handles information. It applies to the app itself. It does not cover the third‑party services the app can connect to (such as Google's Gemini API or external websites you choose to open), which have their own privacy policies.
The following is saved locally on your phone using Android's app storage and is never transmitted to us or to any server we control:
This information stays on your device. If you uninstall the app or clear its data, it is deleted.
AI advisor (Google Gemini). When you use the chat/advisor feature, the messages you
type — along with the ongoing conversation for context — are sent to Google's Gemini API
(generativelanguage.googleapis.com) using the API key you entered. This is required for
the advisor to generate a response. That data is handled by Google under
Google's Privacy Policy
and the
Gemini API Additional Terms of Service.
Because you supply your own key, this usage is associated with your own Google account/project. Please
avoid typing information you don't want sent to a third‑party AI service, and don't share real names,
addresses, or other identifying details about other people.
Important — Google's free tier. If your API key is on Google's free Gemini tier, Google's terms state that Google may use submitted content to provide, improve, and develop its products and services, and that human reviewers may read and process it. Do not submit sensitive, confidential, or personally identifying information through the advisor on a free‑tier key. If you require Google's no‑training data terms, use a paid Gemini API key. Users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland are covered by Google's paid‑services data terms on all tiers.
External links. The Toolkit and resource sections can open public websites (for example, a sex‑offender registry, reverse‑image search, or court‑records search) in your browser. Once you leave the app, those sites' own privacy practices apply.
Messaging / SOS. The safety‑plan feature can pre‑fill a text message or share sheet. These actions use your own device's Messages or sharing apps and are only sent if you choose to send them. Lantern does not send messages on your behalf and does not receive their contents.
None. Lantern has no user accounts and no analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs. We do not operate a backend server that receives your data. We cannot see your API key, your chats, your journal, or your reports.
The app does not request access to your contacts, precise location, camera, microphone, photos, or files. Any messaging is handed off to apps you already have.
Information handled by the app is used only to make the app function for you: to run the AI advisor, remember your settings, keep your journal, and let you report AI content. It is not used for profiling, advertising, or sale. We do not sell or share personal information.
Data saved by the app remains on your device until you delete it. You can remove it at any time by clearing the app's storage (Android Settings → Apps → Lantern → Storage → Clear data) or by uninstalling the app. To delete data you sent to Google via the advisor, or to manage or revoke your API key, use your Google account and Google AI Studio.
Your settings and content are stored in the app's private storage area on your device. Requests to the Gemini API are sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure; because your API key is stored on the device, keep your phone secured and remove the key in Settings if your device is lost or shared.
Lantern is intended for adults (18 and older) and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has used the app, note that the app stores data only on the device and it can be cleared as described above.
Lantern is an educational and planning tool. It does not verify anyone's identity, run background checks, or provide emergency services. In an emergency, contact your local emergency number. In the United States, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1‑800‑799‑7233 (24/7).
We may update this policy as the app changes. When we do, we'll revise the "Effective date" above and post the updated policy at this URL. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
